‘Grow, Learn, Achieve Together’

Physical Education

At Livingstone, we believe that high‑quality Physical Education plays a vital role in helping children develop healthy habits, confidence, teamwork skills and a lifelong love of being active. Our PE curriculum is designed to be engaging, inclusive and progressive from EYFS right through to Year 6.

All classes at Livingstone have two PE sessions each week.

  • One lesson is delivered by a specialist Tameside coach, with a strong focus on developing games skills such as teamwork, coordination, attacking and defending.

  • The second lesson is taught by the class teacher, covering a broad range of activities including games, gymnastics and dance across the year.

To support high‑quality teaching, all class teachers follow the Get Set for PE scheme. This ensures that every child receives well‑structured, engaging lessons and that there is a clear progression of skills and knowledge from EYFS to Year 6. The scheme fully aligns with the EYFS Statutory Framework and the National Curriculum, helping us deliver a consistent and ambitious PE offer for all pupils.

We place great importance on ensuring that all children have the opportunity to meet the National Curriculum swimming expectations by the end of Key Stage 2. Year 5 pupils attend swimming lessons in the Autumn and Spring terms at Copley Swimming Pool. Year 4 pupils attend lessons in the Summer term. This structure means that every child at Livingstone receives a full year of swimming lessons during their time with us, giving them the best possible chance to become confident, safe swimmers.

Throughout the year, children have the chance to take part in a variety of sporting competitions and festivals. Many of these events are organised with local Mossley schools and provide wonderful opportunities for pupils to represent Livingstone, try new sports and develop their confidence. Events often include: tag rugby tournaments, basketball tournaments and Key Stage 1 athletics competitions. We are also proud participants in the Mossley Olympics, where children compete in a range of running, jumping and throwing events alongside pupils from other local schools. These experiences help build teamwork, resilience and a strong sense of community.

At Livingstone, we are committed to providing a PE curriculum that is active, enjoyable and accessible to all. Whether children are learning new skills, improving their fitness or taking part in competitions, we aim to help every pupil feel successful, confident and proud of their achievements.
