Junior Duke Award Scheme
Year 5 and Year 6 pupils at our school have the exciting opportunity to take part in the Junior Duke Award, an internationally recognised life‑skills programme designed to build independence, confidence and resilience. The award encourages pupils to challenge themselves, try new experiences and develop practical skills that will support them throughout their lives.
It is designed to help pupils become more capable, responsible and self‑motivated by completing a series of age‑appropriate challenges. These challenges encourage children to “have a go,” persevere when things are difficult and celebrate progress as well as success.
The Junior Duke Award supports this by helping children to:
-
Build resilience and problem‑solving skills
- Develop confidence through new experiences
-
Strengthen teamwork and communication
-
Learn practical life skills
-
Take responsibility for their own learning and progress
These skills complement our school values and help pupils mature socially, emotionally and academically.
Each level of the Junior Duke Award includes a selection of challenges. Pupils must complete a set number to achieve their certificate and badge. Challenges may include:
-
First Aid
-
ICT and digital skills
-
Eco awareness
-
Drama and performance
-
Music
-
Sports and physical challenges
-
Practical life skills such as cookery or puncture repair
The programme is inclusive and designed so that every child can experience success.
The Junior Duke Award aligns closely with our commitment to developing well‑rounded, confident and capable young people. It encourages children to step outside their comfort zone, learn from mistakes and celebrate their successes — all within a supportive and encouraging environment.
If you have any further questions, please ask to speak to Mrs Legge who leads on the scheme.
